Morgana: PUR Binding for All at Drupa 2012

In Finishing on April 27, 2012 at 8:46 am

Morgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has announced details of a complete range of affordable PUR binders for digital print. The products will form a key part of the company’s exhibit at the forthcoming Drupa exhibition taking place May 3 to 16, Dusseldorf, Germany. The company can be found in hall 8B, stand A65, at the show; close to its major customer base, the digital print engine manufacturers.

PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available, offering several additional advantages over other binding adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can often compromise the strength of a typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stocks.

Morgana’s new range of PUR binders will be exhibited for the very first time at Drupa. Whilst the DigiBook 300 is already known to European customers following its release towards the end of 2011, and with installations already having taken place in a number of countries, two further models have been added to complete the range. The DigiBook series of machines is now suited to all sizes of digital printers, and all sizes of typical digital print run.

An entry level solution has been included in the range: the DigiBook 150 is capable of 150 cycles per hour, and can bind publications with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, in book sizes up to 380 x 320mm. A key feature of the 150, and across the DigiBook range, is the patented glue application system. Spine and side glue is applied using an adjustable slot applicator allowing accurate control over both functions to give the best possible results. All the machines have a hermetically sealed glue and cleaning system which gives the quickest possible start-up and shutdown of the system with minimal glue wastage.

The DigiBook 300 can bind up to 300 books per hour, and features a pneumatic opening and closing clamp. The product can handle spine thicknesses of 1 to 50mm, with a binding length from 100 to 450mm. The unit also has an angled work surface which hold the book upright when released from the clamp making the system very productive and easy to use.

The top of the range machine, and most productive model, is the DigiBook 450. This machine can produce up to 450 books per hour and is equipped with automatic cover feeding, and automatic delivery and stacking of finished books.

“PUR binding for digital is a real growth area for finishing equipment providers. We have seen significant interest since we announced the DigiBook 300, and expect business to grow considerably this year,” said Quen Baum, Managing Director of Morgana Systems. “With us now having a full range of PUR binders, we have a model to suit everyone’s production requirements. I expect we will receive a strong interest from both our UK and international audience.”

PUR Range

The DigiBook range of machines are suited to both traditional and digital printers who require either short-run or production capacity PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The innovative DigiBook range of machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system, where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy.

DigiBook machines are innovative bookbinding products designed and built for the very latest market requirements. They are easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics, suitable for the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds. These include both start-up and shutdown and use a new, innovative system which is covered by a number of international patents.

The applicator is direct, and is hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, meaning that no extractor fan is required. This solution allows for the use of polyurethane glue in cartridges of up to 3kg, all adding up to simple and waste-free binding.
