Brands Hatch-2

Morgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has announced details of its latest 2013 Morgana Pro Tour event. The event taking place at the Thistle Hotel, Brands Hatch on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd May, will be the first outing for the new range of Morgana booklet makers and feeders following the recent acquisition by Plockmatic.

Visitors will be able to see and try out a wide range of Morgana products, including the Morgana System 2000 booklet making line complete with the ACF510 feeder, which is capable of producing pre-collated sets from digital engines and litho printed sheets for collating.

Also on show will be the popular new PUR perfect binding machine, the Digibook 150, producing a wide range of books on mixed gloss, digital and litho sheets. Print businesses are being encouraged to bring along a quantity of sample work to test the DigiBook 150. This binder has been very well received by UK printing operations since its launch at Drupa 2012. “Companies have been asking for an affordable, high-quality PUR binding machine that is capable of handling small runs,” said Ray Hillhouse, Sales Manager for Morgana Systems. “This entry level machine still gives the same consistency of bind offered by the higher-end 300 and 450 models because it has the same nozzle application system.”

Commenting on the latest show in this continuing series of events taking place up and down the country, Ray Hillhouse added: “Regional events like this give us a great opportunity to take our product to the customer, and let print businesses try them out with their own work, at a location close to them. Hands-on tests, using customers own work where possible, are by far the best way to show a business owner the benefits of a product.”

Products on show at Brands Hatch will include:

DigiFold Pro: DigiFold has been one of Morgana’s best selling products since it was first introduced in 2001. Over 1,000 units were sold before the 5000P model was introduced at Drupa 2008. Offering greatly increased speed this model sold nearly 500 units in its first two years, illustrating the need for a fast, accurate creaser/folder. Despite all the efforts of competitor companies, DigiFold is still the market leader and the product of choice for many digital printing professionals.

AutoCreaser Pro / AutoFold Pro: The latest version of the AutoCreaser Pro is able to provide a massive 50% increase in speed on earlier models, with no loss of accuracy. Now running at 8,500 A4 sheets per hour this is Morgana’s most productive stand-alone creaser to date. AutoFold Pro is a free standing folding unit designed for folding digital stocks using our patented flying knife technology which was developed to prevent the scuffing and marking on digital stocks that are caused by folding using conventional methods.

DocuMaster Pro: Capable of producing up to 1,560 stitched books per hour, the DocuMaster Pro has the same SmartScreen module as used by the whole range of Morgana Pro machines, making it ideal for fast and easy operation. This latest version of the machine benefits from the new PosiFeed feeding system, making an already impressive feeder totally awesome!

AeroCut Quatro: The multifunction machine is now often seen as an essential for the busy print shop where space is at a premium. The AeroCut can finish a huge range of different types of job, which can be completed in one pass. This latest unit can handle the post-press operations needed for 4pp brochures, business cards, tent cards, folded business cards, CD and DVD jackets, and booklets – all with the quickest of set-ups and absolute minimum wastage.

DigiBook 150: The DigiBook 150 is Morgana’s entry-level PUR product. It is capable of approximately 150 cycles per hour, and can bind publications with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, in book sizes up to 380 x 320mm. A key feature of the 150, and across the DigiBook range, is the patented glue application system. Spine and side glue is applied using an adjustable slot applicator allowing accurate control over both functions to give the best possible results. All the machines have a hermetically sealed glue and cleaning system which gives the quickest possible start-up and shutdown of the system with minimal glue wastage.

Morgana Gets Top Marks at University of Glasgow

In Finishing on March 27, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Ray Dickson, Print Unit SupervisorMorgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has installed a range of post-press product at the University of Glasgow’s Print Unit, including folding and creasing equipment and a specialist business card cutting machine, the CardXtra.

The Print Unit within the University of Glasgow undertakes the usual wide range of work associated with university in-plant units. With high quality print created on a Canon ImagePRESS C6010 digital printer, everything from basic stationery to significant sized publications are produced by the small team.

“We produce a surprising amount of business cards for our Schools, Colleges and Institutes within the University,” said Ray Dickson, Print Unit Supervisor at the University. “This assists the University in marketing itself while hosting and attending conferences and other events around the world, hence our investment in the CardXtra business card cutter from Morgana. Our School of Veterinary Medicine, for example, places orders for 5,000 cards at a time, and we were recently handling four separate orders for them at the same time – that’s a lot of business cards! Imagine how long that would have taken to trim on a standard guillotine. The CardXtra, however, just sits there, virtually unattended, cranking out trimmed cards all day long.”

Whilst the CardXtra is the most used finishing machine in the unit, the Morgana DocuFold Pro and AutoCreaser 33 are kept pretty busy too. The touch screen technology with common interface on these to two Morgana products has especially impressed Ray Dickson. “Whilst we have three full time staff, we swell our ranks at busy periods of the year with part-time operators. They come with less experience in print finishing, so the relatively simple operator interface of the Morgana folding and creasing products is a tremendous benefit.”

The Print Unit has to pay its way as a service department within the University. “We have to operate as a full-cost recovery service which means that we have to pay for ourselves and hopefully record a modest surplus too. The equipment that we invest in has to be productive and pay its way. All of the Morgana product that we have purchased has certainly done that – it’s fair to say that each product has proved an excellent investment and an essential piece of equipment.”

The fact that Morgana has a Scottish office was certainly a factor in the decision to purchase from the company. “If nothing else it gives the appearance that Scotland and Scottish businesses really matter to Morgana. Does it make a huge difference on a day-to-day basis? Probably not, the kit has proved very reliable, but it is comforting to know that help is at hand if we need it.

“Local based support was a factor in our decision making, along with build quality, reliability and ease-of-use. The Morgana equipment easily won our vote over the competition and it is to Morgana’s credit that much of the kit is British built!”
