College Education for Benson Box Employees

Benson Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned printed folding carton manufacturers, has been celebrating the hard work and studying success of its Benson Box personnel that have been furthering their education at nearby Loughborough College.

The college is helping ensure business improvement techniques stay wrapped up at the Leicestershire-based packaging company! In fact, so many staff at Benson Box gained qualifications following this year’s training that the company recently had to hold four separate awards ceremonies at its Bardon site to present certificates to all of those that took part.

No fewer than 88 staff received a combination of ILM’s for Leadership and Management and NVQ’s gained in the past year through courses provided by the Leicestershire College.

Jonathan Bostock, 47, from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, a sales manager at the company, says his qualification has opened doors he never imagined: “Before this, the last real learning I did was O- levels and A-levels a long time ago, and I didn’t take them very seriously.

“I used to be part of the team I now manage so I owed it to them, to the business and to myself to do the best I could – but it has really exceeded my expectations in the confidence and skills boost it has given me, so much so that I am now stepping up to degree level.

“Loughborough College has been fantastic and I know the support will be there as I move on from my ILM5 to my ILM7 which, if I pass, gives me a BA Honours Degree. My daughter is at University and I am determined to get my degree before her.”

Departmental Manager Ian McFadyean, 45, from Newton Burgoland, was equally enthusiastic: “I bit the College’s hand off when I was offered the training. I have been with Benson Box for 11 years and although I have worked my way up I have also been out of education for 25 years. In the current climate no one can be complacent. It’s about future-proofing yourself, and building the skills to help you keep moving forward.

“The course delivery was perfect and it can only have given me an edge compared to others who haven’t done it. In fact, I have been so surprised by the positive impact it has had on work day-to-day that I am now going for the degree.”

Mike Owens, General Manager at Benson Box said: “It is imperative that any business gives its employees the opportunity for both self-development and progression in their working lives. We started this intensive process over two years ago and are fully committed to long-term training planning for our workforce. These awards are reflective of the commitment we see every day from our employees. Each of them should be very proud of their achievement. This training has been instrumental in our continued growth and I am positive that it will also lead to further business success in the future. I would like to thank Loughborough College for their outstanding and dedicated support in this journey.”

David Midgley, Operations Manager at Benson Box, added his thoughts: “Benson Box is doing well by doing good, and training is doing good.”
