Benson Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned printed folding carton manufacturers, is celebrating an award for its support for education and training from Leicester College.

The award to Benson Group was made in recognition of the outstanding contribution that the company has made to Leicester College. The presentation of the certificate was made to representatives from Benson Group during the Leicester College Awards to Industry 2013 breakfast event, which took place earlier this month.

Commenting on the award, Beena Pattni, Business Delivery Manager at Leicester College, said: “We are extremely proud of our links with local employers such as Benson Group. Our aim is to educate and train people who will form the backbone of the national and local workforce. Benson Group as a business provides essential support for education and training, consistently offering employment to young people and training opportunities.”

Louise Webster, Human Resources Advisor for Benson Group, said: “We were thrilled and delighted to be recognised as a contributor to the excellent work that is undertaken at Leicester College. In our opinion, a college helps to complete a rounded education for any apprenticeship role. Whilst we can provide the key on-the-job training, it is just as important to have a quality off-site learning environment to provide the additional information and understanding needed by trainees.

“Apprenticeships are important for our own needs at Benson Group, but we also consider the creation of skilled operators to be good for the packaging industry as a whole, and important for our customers, who will still need packaging experts for many years to come.”

Speedmaster XL 106 Swiftly into Action at Benson Bardon

The latest press install at Benson Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned printed folding carton manufacturers, is already having an impact on print throughput. The Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 added its significant firepower to the company’s press line-up in April 2013 and immediately contributed 4 million sheets during its first month of operation.

The new 18,000sph B1 press unveiled by Heidelberg at Drupa last May, is the first press purchase since managing director Mark Kerridge and commercial director Nick Benson led a management buyout of the company at the end of 2011. The new press sits alongside two Speedmaster XL 105 machines.

Commenting on the new arrival, Mike Owens, General Manager at the Bardon site, said: “The four million sheet production figure for the press was particularly impressive as operator training was still taking place during that period. Make-ready on the XL 106 is especially slick, and we have been delighted with the quality of the work being produced, as well as its productivity.”

Make-ready capabilities are brought into sharp focus with early running figure comparisons with the XL 105 machines at the plant. The new press is producing up to 2,000 sheets per hour more, due largely to the time taken to change from one job to the next.

The latest machine is specified with six printing units running low-migration UV inks and is configured with a dedicated in-line coater. In keeping with the plant’s environmental focus, the new press will run alcohol-free from day one. This latest addition will replace a competitor’s B1-format press.

The build process went smoothly, with space being available in the Bardon production hall for the new press without the need to remove a current production unit. “With 20 million plus cartons being printed here every week there is little room for adjustment in our production routine,” added Mike Owens.

Matt Rockley, B1 Product Manager for Heidelberg UK, said: “Hats off to the production team for this excellent output! The press installation was seamless with great co-operation from the Bardon site staff, and the press produced at maximum speed from the start. The new machine runs alongside two existing XL presses, all using zero-alcohol in conjunction with low migration inks and UV curing, and with the fully automated non-stop Logistics pallet feeding.”

The XL 106 features Prinect Axis Control, a spectral measurement device that includes the ability to scan in and store company specific Pantone colours, which is ideal in a brand sensitive sector. Logistics, the automatic delivery of pallets to the press and removal of finished work pallets from the press, adds to the production efficiency and fits with the company’s focus on lean manufacturing.

“The spec matches the requirements of our particular markets and, being consistent with previous installations, continues to build on the site’s ability to respond flexibly to our very dynamic market place. The ability to produce any job on any press enables this site to print over 1,250 individual jobs each month,” says Mark Kerridge, Managing Director of Benson Group.

“For our customers it means we can deliver a world class performance, providing continuous improvements in quality, service and cost competitiveness. The continuous drive to deliver “more for less” to the consumer is even more important in the current economic climate.”
