Plymouth-based ColourXpress is proud to announce it has replaced its Ryobi 525HXX B3 landscape-format offset litho printing press with a 526GX machine from the same manufacturer. The product was purchased from UK Ryobi distributor Apex Digital Graphics. This latest configuration joins a Ryobi 524GXP.

ColourXpress is a leading print and design business based in Plymouth. It provides customers with cutting edge design for print, logos, websites, interactive media, and exhibition stands. The company is one of the only design-to-print agencies in the South West, with purpose built offices in both Plymouth and Ivybridge.

“In our experience Ryobi B3-format presses provide exceptional print quality and are extremely reliable and well built,” said Mike Corran, Managing Director of ColourXpress. “The move to the six-colour model provides us with a clear advantage over other regional printers. We are now able to offer clients standard four-colour print, plus a spot colour, with the addition of a sealer all in one pass. The printed sheets are then passed through an on-board IR dryer to ensure they are touch dry and ready for finishing.” The six-colour machine is already being used on a double-day shift to keep up with ever increasing demand.

This sits alongside a Ryobi 524GXP press that is capable of providing 2/2 perfected printing. “This complements our six-colour press perfectly as we also produce a large amount of two-colour work. The benefit of printing two-colours on both sides of the sheet in one pass gives us a significant price advantage over most printers, and streamlines our production times,” added Mike. The new press additions are being kept very busy, particularly after ColourXpress recently won a NHS contract which totals in excess of 750,000 impressions per month.

The company also produces a variety of digital and large format printing with a suite of Xerox and Epson printers and a high-speed six-colour HP Indigo digital press. This, combined with Heidelberg Quickmaster presses, ensures ColourXpress can deliver the highest quality print to fulfil all customer needs. A wide range of in-house finishing ensures that printed work can be completed and despatched swiftly, controlling the production process from print to delivery.

“Whilst we were delighted with the performance of the previous Ryobi press, the capabilities of the GX version have impressed us greatly and improved our productivity no end,” said Mike Corran. “Print speed is comparable with anything else on the market in the B3 format with up to 15,000 sheets per hour.”

From a technical perspective the presses have proved easy for the ColourXpress operators to adapt to. “The automation has significantly helped the operators, with features such as IVS, which allows for ink profiles to be set on the press prior to production, has meant the operator can focus on print quality and rely on the PDSE to monitor colour density throughout the run,” confirmed Mike.

Commenting on the general market conditions for printers in the South West, Mike Corran added: “The work is definitely out there. We have to work a little harder to secure it, but quality, consistency and service are still sought after – it’s not all about the price! It is essential that we help customers to understand the importance of well branded print, supported by informative electronic communications.”

ColourXpress, formed in 1996, has recently been awarded Government funding allowing it to take on additional highly skilled staff. This will undoubtedly take ColourXpress from strength to strength.

Commenting on the installation for Apex Digital Graphics, Neil Handforth, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Mike and the team at ColourXpress illustrate perfectly how litho print has an important role to play in a print and communications focused business. The Ryobi equipment works in tandem with digital products to produce a wide range of work, with the company adding its own elements of uniqueness through its graphic design capabilities. This is an ideal example of how to create a print-focused company that is both efficient, effective and profitable.”
