Joensuu, Finland: Punamusta printing house has switched to manroland web systems for a major press order – a COLORMAN autoprint.

While well acquainted with technology from other manufacturers, the Finnish company Punamusta chose to bank on the reliability of printing systems from manroland web systems for its latest major order. The installation of the state-of-the-art press will start in the summer of 2014, with a production start date scheduled for early 2015.

In order to upgrade its facilities Punamusta has invested around 15 million euros in its production technology and premises. The print experts from North Karelia, near the Russian border, want to target new customer groups with the flexible COLORMAN autoprint system. Punamusta, a member of the Pohjois-Karjalan Kirjapaino Group, currently produces a variety of local newspapers as well as advertising material and magazines for the Finnish, Russian, and Scandinavian markets.

The new COLORMAN system, with its two printing towers and two reel splicers, impressed Punamusta with the prospect of shorter make-ready times, improved production reliability, and less waste. In autoprint mode, the printing process is fully automatic and manual intervention has been reduced to a minimum. All data for new runs can be loaded during the automated PPL (PowerPlateLoading) process, meaning the press is immediately ready for the next proof. Inline Control systems such as InlineTemperature Control and InlineCutoff Control ensure the stability of the production run.

“This investment will allow Punamusta to make a giant leap in terms of efficient newspaper printing. The available automation options will make newspaper production faster, cheaper, and much more user-friendly.” said Klaus Streit, Deputy Vice President Sales at manroland web systems.

Benson Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned printed folding carton manufacturers, is getting itself ready for a big fundraising push for this year’s Children In Need event. The company’s North East production sites have created Fancy Dress Friday’s in order to get the pounds rolling in, along with a number of other activities that are due to raise even more funds.

With the actual BBC event due to happen on November 15, there are a few Friday’s to go yet: further photographs are anticipated! The current schedule for themes includes:

October 25: 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s Pop Stars

November 1: Halloween

November 8: Famous Sports Stars

November 15: Free-for-All with a prize on offer for the best!

Commenting on the fundraising activity, Carol-Anne Lynch, who is co-ordinating the event at Benson Gateshead, said: “We wanted to do something for Children In Need that everybody could get involved in easily and at no great cost. Our first week was focused on school-wear, and we have already raised £50 from those who preferred not to dress up! I am quite sure that our fancy dress capabilities will expand further as the next few Friday’s come along.”

Other donation raising activities are already in the Benson Gateshead plan, including two members of the management team who are willing to swap club colours for the day: Sunderland and Newcastle shirts being exchanged. An “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” banquet is also being organised, with a menu of “not so pleasant” dishes scheduled to arrive at the table for the management team to trial. More details on these and other Benson Group fundraising activities to follow shortly!

Benson Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned printed folding carton manufacturers, is delighted to announce that four apprentices from its Benson Bardon plant have been nominated by sponsor Leicester College for the Apprentices Category of the Leicestershire Young Achievers Awards 2013.

The Young Achievers Awards 2013 has been launched by local newspaper the Leicester Mercury to celebrate the achievements of outstanding young people in Leicestershire. Nominations are invited for people aged 14 to 25, with the winners of the competition’s ten categories to be announced at a ceremony on December 5 at Leicester City FC’s King Power Stadium. Each category winner will receive £250 and a trophy.

Benson Group’s four apprentices are Becky Timson (repro apprentice), Jamie Skipper (CAD), Joe Jacklin (print), and Daniel Cunningham (print).

Louise Webster, Human Resources Advisor for Benson Group, said: “We were thrilled and delighted that our apprentices have been nominated for this award by the team at Leicester College. Recognition of hard work by young people in the manufacturing industry is essential in my opinion. Leicester Mercury has created a great way of spotlighting the very best in young achievement.

“Apprenticeships are important for our own needs at Benson Group, but we also consider the creation of skilled operators to be positive for the packaging industry as a whole. It is also essential for our customers, who will require packaging experts for many years to come. We wish our youngsters every success with these awards.”
