Bordon, Hampshire-based Colourgraphic Arts has equipped itself with a PUR binder and creasing device from Morgana Systems Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing. The DigiBook 450 represents the top of the range PUR device provided by Morgana, whilst the AutoCreaser Pro 50 will speed up the production of short-run work at the company.

Following a recent steady increase in higher pagination work the Hampshire litho and digital print producer had been placing an increasing amount of perfect binding with external suppliers. With a 1.5 hour drive to the nearest provider the process was beginning to have an impact on speed of turnaround for urgent jobs: “We have a focus on bringing as many processes in-house as we can, so it just made sense for us to make PUR our next investment,” said Vince Scardarella, Managing Director of Colourgraphic Arts.

Commenting on the purchase process, Dronz Arigho, production manager at the company, said: “We were able to review the full Morgana range of PUR binders at the company’s Milton Keynes showroom, including the 200 and the 300, but our business focus is always on best quality and speed of service, so it made sense for us to go for the top of the range. The DigiBook 450 gives a production speed of up to 450 books per hour. This comes into its own when we are finishing the longer run litho printed work.”

To further aid faster finishing, the company included a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 50 in its order. Whilst the company continues to use cylinder press for its longer run cutting and creasing requirements, much of the shorter run work doesn’t warrant the set-up time needed on that machine. “Where we have a digitally printed run of 50 sheets that needs creasing the AutoCreaser is the perfect solution – we can run the job in the time it would take the cylinder press to make-ready,” said Vince Scardarella.

“We often work with thicker materials when producing high quality products – substrates such as 170gsm coated stock definitely need creasing before further finishing stages are carried out. A dedicated creaser is important to producing a top quality job.”

With over seven years of digital print experience, the company currently uses two Canon ImagePress production machines, along with a five-colour Heidelberg Speemaster CD B2-format litho press. The company produce a wide range of commercial colour print, including books, periodicals, promotional, and brochure work.

Commenting on the order, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “We often focus on the advantages to the digital printer of the DigiBook range – fast make-ready and the sealed glue tank, making them ideal for short run production – but the DigiBook 450 model is also ideal for those producing longer run work via litho. The guys from Colourgraphic were able to see the benefits of the additional automation offered by this top of the range model.”

PUR Binding from Morgana

PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area of printed pages these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR overcomes this issue and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock.

The DigiBook 450 perfect binding machine is ideally suited to litho and digital printers that require medium to long runs of PUR perfect bound books to a high standard. This innovative machine is equipped with a patented closed gluing system where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost bringing quality and accuracy.
