London-based City Printing Ltd has become the latest UK print business to equip itself with a PUR binder from Morgana Systems, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing. The DigiBook 200 installation also included a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 33 to further assist the post-press operation of the busy London print business.
Whilst City Printing Managing Director Michael Peters has been a big Morgana fan for some 20 years, his first venture with PUR binding had been with another supplier: “We had used a competitors machine, but we were not able to produce the ultra short-runs as cost effectively as we had hoped. The DigiBook 200 is definitely a significant improvement – it requires minimal set-up, produces minimal waste, and because of the sealed glue tank, you can produce a single copy of a publication and not waste huge amounts of adhesive.”
City Printing handles a wide range of digitally printed run-lengths from one through to several thousand. The DigiBook 200 has proved to be both cost efficient and highly productive whatever the quantity.
“We produced one job recently – a booklet with a run of 200 copies. We were able to print and bind the job in a single afternoon. We used to have to put PUR work out to a trade binder, so having this machine in-house effectively saved us over two days compared to the last time that we produced it!”
The company also added a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 33 to its range of finishing equipment in order to crease publication covers prior to binding.
Commenting on Morgana as a supplier, Michael Peters said: “They are a great company to work with. The machines do exactly what Morgana say they will do, the machines are reliable, simple to operate, the technical back-up from the company is excellent, and, very importantly, they are really nice people!”
Digital printing at City Printing is created via a mix of Xerox, Ricoh, and OKI engines, producing a wide range of commercial work. The company employs a team of ten people.
Commenting on this latest Morgana equipment order, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “The variety of production speeds offered by our DigiBook range provides machines to suit all print businesses. The 200 model is ideal for the needs of City Printing, where the fast turnaround of orders in a variety of quantities is the typical requirement. The quality of PUR bound books is fast becoming the standard that print buyers are expecting. Companies that are serious about providing quality bound products now know that a PUR investment is an essential.”
PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area of printed pages these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR overcomes this issue and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock.
The DigiBook 200 is a truly innovative binding machine designed and built for today’s market requirements. It is easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel and icon graphics that allow the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds, including start-up and shut-down. Glue application is direct and hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, therefore not requiring extraction fans. The polyurethane glue is delivered via 2kg cartridges in a simple and waste-free manner.
