Apex Launch New Cron CtP at “Real Print and Finish”

In Pre-Press on March 29, 2017 at 2:27 pm

Apex Digital Graphics, the official RMGT Ryobi press distributor for the UK in formats up to SRA1 and for Cron computer-to-plate solutions, used its recent “Real Print and Real Finish” event to launch a new compact format, eco-friendly Cron platesetting solution targeted at B3-format litho printers.

Cron UVP26H

The Cron UVP-2632HX is a fully automated external drum CtP system with auto-loading and in-line plate punch. The system runs the new Blackwood Emerald UV low-chemistry plates, and the in-line Cron Emerald wash unit cleans the plate of unexposed polymer with a simple soap and water solution.

Maximum plate format for the unit is 670 x 560mm and minimum size is 240 x 240mm. Resolution options range from 2,400 through to 3,600dpi. The UV laser light source on the unit on show consisted of 32 diodes.

Commenting on this latest addition to the comprehensive range of Cron CtP units now available, Bob Usher, Managing Director of Apex, said: “Our friends at Cron have listened to our thoughts on what the market in the UK is needing right now and have provided us with the ideal machine for the B3 litho market. Having installed over 500 DPX Systems in the UK when polyester plate material took the market by storm, we view this latest addition to the Cron range as the ideal machine to replace that very popular product.”

The compact format of the unit has been achieved by integrating the autoloader and punch system into the imaging unit, and developing a smaller footprint wash unit.

“The basic system will be able to produce some 26 plates per hour, and should be capable of imaging up to 850 square meters of plate per month. A typical B3 printer in the UK is generally looking at producing some 2,000 square meters per annum, therefore the machine is comfortably in specification for the busy B3 print shop,” added Bob Usher.

List price for the new unit will be £32,000.

The UVP-2632HX was one of three Cron CtP units on show at the event. Plates were being imaged on the larger machines in order to run on the feature exhibit, an RMGT Ryobi 924 LED-UV press recently installed in the Apex showroom.

RMGT Ryobi printing equipment, IFS finishing solutions, Imprint MIS software, as well as products from Renz, Cyan-X, KAS Paper Systems, and Graphic Arts Supplies, and representatives of Premier Paper Group and IPIA were all available to visitors of the three-day event at Apex’s Hemel Hempstead showroom.

Pipi Packaging Prints Pretty with Prepress Package

In Offset Presses, Pre-Press on March 20, 2017 at 10:43 am

Pipi Print and Packaging Ltd, the Leicester-based packaging specialist, has employed the pre-press knowledge and press know-how of the team at Prepress UK as it has focused on colour quality and consistency from its pair of B2 Heidelberg sheet-fed presses.

The company had contacted Prepress UK after a recommendation from their press engineer. The company urgently needed to move forward with their colour accuracy and consistency, as well as improve make-ready times when moving from job to job.

Nic Chapman, Director of Prepress UK, takes up the story: “We were able to put together a package of products and services to enable Pipi Print & Packaging to get the best from their presses – improving colour reproduction, reducing make-ready times and costs, and improving repeatability, colour consistency, and general on-press performance.” The company run two Heidelberg B2-format presses: a CD74 with Image Control and an SM74 with Axis Control.

Commenting on the products and service provided by Prepress UK, Raj Palmer, Managing Director of Pipi Print and Packaging, said: “We are producing packaging product for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets, where quality and consistency are critical. It was important for us to be getting the very best out of our litho presses.

“In addition to that, print runs are relatively short when running multiple images to view on a B2 sheet. That means that job changeover and make-ready times have become ever more critical in ensuring both profitability and efficiency of production.

“The package provided by Prepress UK focused on both of these important areas. We have been very impressed with the results. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to other printers seeking to find similar improvements.”

Both the Image Control and Axis Control packages were not performing as effectively as they should have been. The manufacturers quote for repair of the two colour stations was prohibitively high.

Detailing the work undertaken, Nic Chapman added: “The package consisted of a press health check and a training package put together by our Heidelberg press demonstrator, including repair and servicing of the on-press colour measuring devices. We then added our PressProfiler ink-key presetting system, and included our dot-gain calibration service.

“We began with service work on the presses as the first priority. This helped us to ensure that both presses were printing to a consistently high quality. In practical terms, it meant that we could be confident of the print stability across the sheet and for the duration of the print run.

“This was followed by a visit from our Heidelberg technician to repair both of the colour scanning devices on presses, at a fraction of the cost that Heidelberg had quoted.  They were repaired and calibrated and the press operators trained on the correct use of these important measuring tools.

“We installed PressProfiler – our favoured ink-key presetting solution – which helps to ensure that the Pipi press operators can then get the best out of the colour scanners.”

The combination of PressProfiler and the scanning stations helps to minimise make-ready time and wastage, and goes on to maintain consistent colour throughout the print run. Pipi Print & Packaging already estimate improvements of at least 20% in make-ready times thanks to the new package.

“Finally, once the presses were stable, test print runs were performed on both presses to establish the correct ink weights to achieve target solid ink colour, followed by dot-gain measurement and adjustment to match tone value targets. These enhancements have maximised compliance with the ISO 12647-2 standard.”

How it Works: PressProfiler

PressProfiler examines digital files received from any workflow and generates ink-key pre-setting data to save set-up time on an offset litho printing press at job changeover. Whilst the pre-press data can be fed directly into the press console of newer machines, integration with older equipment can involve the profiling software working in conjunction with Prepress UK’s unique CardWriter package.

PCP Orders Nine-Colour RMGT Perfector Press

In Offset Presses on March 5, 2017 at 4:02 pm

Telford-based Precision Colour Printing (PCP) Ltd, one of the leading UK magazine and commercial printing companies, has announced details of an order for an RMGT (Mitsubishi) 1050 Tandem Perfector press to replace an existing Mitsubishi machine and enhance its sheet-fed printing capabilities. The press has been purchased from Surrey-based MPL Ltd, the UK distributor for RMGT (Mitsubishi) presses.

The machine is specified as an RMGT 1050 TP 9. It features nine printing units in a 4-over-5 configuration, built in the unique tandem perfector arrangement, complete with chamber coater unit and an extended delivery.

Commenting on the purchase decision, Alex Evans, Managing Director of PCP, said: “Any press investment is a critical decision for a printer. We wanted to make sure we made the right one. After looking at a number of presses and manufacturers at Drupa 2016 we saw a number of presses in action in printers across the UK and Europe.

“Having made the decision to purchase the Mitsubishi, we are now looking forward to the installation of a very exciting press – we believe that this new machine is unique in our market, and will allow us to provide a whole range of new and exciting products for our customer portfolio.

“The 4-over-5 configuration, supported by a coating unit, will provide a full UV drying system, with both inter-unit and after coater curing lamps. It will allow for such techniques as drip off varnish for spot and matt UV, metallic inks, and flood UV in one pass. It is the only press of this configuration and specification in Europe and offers PCP a major opportunity to stand out in the magazine covers sector.”

Installation of the new press at PCP’s Telford site will take place in August of this year. The £40-million turnover business employs some 250 personnel at the 13-acre site. The new press will join a Heidelberg SM10P sheet-fed machine and Komori and manroland web presses.

Commenting on the order on behalf of MPL, Mark Stribley, Joint Managing Director, said: “The 24/7 production of a business like PCP requires the reliability and peace of mind that can only be offered by RMGT equipment. We are delighted that Alex and his team have chosen our product for this project and are looking forward to working closely with them through the installation period and beyond.”

This latest investment is valued at over £2.7 million.
