Izi Hicks is to Run the London Marathon, 2017

izi

My dear darling daughter, Izi Hicks, has entered and been accepted to run in this year’s London Marathon, to be run on April 23rd of this year!

Although she has completed a number of half marathons already, this will be her first 26 mile event. Training is going well (and so are the new running shoes that Dad had to buy her for her birthday!).

She is running to raise money for a charity that supports children with cancer (and yes, she was hoping to be accepted by one of the MS charities, but they were all over-subscribed!).

Children with Cancer UK helps many young children, and their parents, to cope after hearing the devastating news of their diagnosis. These young patients can’t help themselves, but the charity aims to fund research and treatment as well as give these young lives experiences to remember.

Any donation that you are able to give will go towards an amazing charity that works so hard to help children who are unable to help themselves.

With your help the charity will be able to spend on research to help find the causes, fund prevention, and help with treatments for patients. It will also be able to fund welfare programmes for children who already have cancer, helping to improve the time they have left for both the children and their families.

If you are able to assist Izi to reach her fundraising target please do click on this link to her fundraising page:

Many thanks for reading this, and special thanks if you are able to give some support to Izi and her chosen charity,

Best Regards, Russ Hicks

Further to the recently released news of his participation in this year’s event, Dave Betteley, PrePress Team Leader at Benson Group’s Medica Packaging operation in Crewe, has confirmed his finishing time of 2:44:45 earned him a more-than-respectable 357th place (out of some 36,000 starters!) at the London Marathon, which took place on April 13, 2014.

This superb performance has now now qualified Dave for a position on the championship start for next year’s race.

Print and packaging people are urged to dig deep into their pockets to salute this remarkable effort. Dave was running to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit at his local Leighton Hospital, Crewe, and whilst he was aiming at a sub-three-hour finish, the time achieved deserves our collective salute!

The Special Care Baby Unit has a special place in Dave’s heart as his youngest son spent the first week of his life there, and it is thanks to the dedication of staff in the unit that his son is here today. The money raised by Dave, and others, is going to Leighton Hospital’s recently launched “1 in 11 appeal”.

As an added incentive, Dave’s eldest son has already completed the Sport Relief Charity Swim raising almost £500. “I’ve got try and at least match that,” said Dave, pointing us all towards his web page at http://www.justgiving.com/David-Betteley

Medica Packaging Man Ready for London Marathon

Dave Betteley, PrePress Team Leader at Benson Group’s Medica Packaging operation in Crewe, is ready to take on the ultimate sporting challenge with this year’s London Marathon, which takes place April 13, 2014.

Running to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit at his local Leighton Hospital, Crewe, Dave is aiming at a sub-three-hour time.

Commenting on his marathon history, Dave said: “It all started back in March 2013 after running the Stafford 20 mile road race in a time of 2hrs and 5mins. I decided at that point to run the Blackpool Marathon, with the aim of clocking a “Good for Age” qualifying time for this year’s London Marathon. This meant that I would have to run under 3hrs 15mins. On the April 7 last year I completed the Blackpool Marathon in 3 hours and 7 seconds.

“This started my focus on training straight away. By the end of 2013 I’d run 2,200 miles over 339 runs. It does call for dedication: often two or even three runs per day, no matter what the weather, as well as some gym work five days a week, using weights to complement all the running, with the aim of keeping a balance between endurance and strength, and trying not to get injured through the impact running on joints and muscles. Added to that I cycle to work every day for some additional non-impact training.”

As an added incentive, Dave’s eldest son has already completed the Sport Relief Charity Swim raising almost £500. “I’ve got try and at least match that,” said Dave, pointing us all towards his web page at http://www.justgiving.com/David-Betteley

For marathon watchers, Dave will be relatively easy to spot in a bright orange vest with Medica Packaging on the front and Dave B on the back. Track his progress by following his race number 32032, and do please sponsor his efforts.
