Second PUR Plus High-Capacity Creaser for Belfast’s Northside

In Finishing on June 12, 2017 at 3:30 pm

Northern Ireland’s premier digital print business, Northside Graphics Ltd of Belfast, has added further Morgana finishing equipment in order to maintain its speed of delivery of digitally printed work.

NSG Morgana sml

This latest investment consists of a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binding machine – the second such machine for the Roundtower Industrial Estate premises – and a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 385 creasing machine, the first of the new high-capacity units to be installed in Northern Ireland. The new equipment has been purchased through and installed by Reprocentre NI, the Morgana dealer for Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the purchase decision, Richard Campbell, Operations Director at Northside in Belfast, said: “The recent purchase of a second Morgana DigiBook binder and high-capacity AutoCreaser has been made necessary by the huge growth in demand for PUR books from both Northside clients in Northern Ireland and from Northside’ s online business at the www.digitalprinting.co.uk web site.

“After working with the first DigiBook 200 for over a year, the purchase of a second machine was, for us, an easy decision and allowed us to keep up with the large growth in our customers’ demand for PUR bound books. We are able to produce any size and page content of book with quantities from 1 to 500 or more.

“The second Morgana DigiBook 200 has been purchased to replace an older PUR binder that had simply not been able to keep up with the quality, speed, and efficient production of the Morgana machine.”

Northside already has a number Morgana AutoCreasers and were about to purchase an additional machine to work alongside the new binder when the local dealer introduced the new Pro 385.

“The main benefit of the 385 is that we can crease covers for our PUR books in one pass rather than two thanks to its dual creasing capability, as well as produce other creased products faster than was previously possible. The new AutoCreaser Pro 385 sits with our two PUR binders so that we can quickly and easily crease all the covers for PUR bound books as we need them. The 385 is the first piece of equipment that we have bought without a live demo simply on the strength of our relationship with both Reprocentre and Morgana. We know and trust their products.”

Northside produce a wide range of digital print including leaflets, flyers, folders, labels, invites and booklets. The company currently employ 47 staff at the Belfast plant, providing a recently introduced 24-hour production capability. Northside’s current turnover is approximately £4 million per year.

Commenting on the installation, Bill Forde of Reprocentre NI, said: “We are delighted to have been able to assist Northside once again with the post-press equipment needs of the company. Having installed Northern Ireland’s first DigiBook 200 there almost a year ago, the need for a second such unit shows the growth of the customer, as well as their confidence in the equipment provided by Morgana. They now have the first AutoCreaser Pro 385 in Northern Ireland.”

PUR Binding from Morgana

PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area of printed pages these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR overcomes this issue and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock.

The DigiBook 200 is a truly innovative binding machine designed and built for today’s market requirements. It is easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel and icon graphics that allow the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds, including start-up and shut-down. Glue application is direct and hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, therefore not requiring extraction fans. The polyurethane glue is delivered via 2kg cartridges in a simple and waste-free manner.

AutoCreaser Pro 385

The introduction of a high-capacity vacuum top-feeder that can take a sheet pile of some 450mm is ideal for a busy print plant. Once the size and thickness of stock are entered, all other feeder functions including air and vacuum settings, and side guide positions are automatically adjusted for quick and easy setup of jobs. Stock of up to 0.4mm can be creased with virtually no cracking of the sheets or the toner on them.

As well as the new feeder, this version of the AutoCreaser will have a dual creasing blade and matrix, which is particularly useful if producing covers for perfect binding where the spine and hinge creases can be produced in one pass, or for those users who wish to change creasing profiles regularly. The new AutoCreaser Pro 385 can run at up to 8,500 sheets per hour.

Billingham Press Latest to Install DigiBook 200

In Finishing on January 13, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Tees Valley-based Billingham Press has become the latest UK print business to install a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binding machine. Morgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, launched the DigiBook 200 last year at Ipex 2014 as the latest addition to its popular PUR perfect binder range. The Billingham Press purchase was made via Morgana dealer for the North East, Inkland.

Billingham1

Commenting on the purchase, Ian Dodds, Managing Director of Billingham Press, said: “We have been enjoying an increasing demand for our digitally printed work, and whilst we have a fully operational bindery for our litho printing, digital really demands equipment that is specific to short-run production.

“We began working with Morgana equipment some 18 months ago with the purchase of a DocuMaster bookletmaking machine. The square back capability of the system makes it ideal for a wide range of design agency booklet work that we produce – typically A4 or A5 in size, with runs in the region of two to four hundred copies.

“Having taken the decision to then seek an efficient in-house perfect binding solution, Morgana were naturally one of the companies that we approached.”

Whilst Billingham Press had never been involved in perfect binding production on-site before, the cost, the lead time, and the amount of overs being asked for by trade suppliers prompted Ian and his team to seek a more effective solution.

Ian tasked son Thomas Dodds – who has only been working in the business for a couple of years – to review the market. “Thomas saw product from a number of suppliers, including Duplo and Morgana, and his conclusion was that the Morgana DigiBook product provided the best solution for our needs,” said Ian Dodds.

Local Morgana dealer Inkland, already a pre-press supplier to Billingham Press, took the order and delivered the Morgana DigiBook 200.

“We are not producing huge volumes of work on the machine as yet,” said Ian. “But the work that we have produced – typically short-run booklet work – shows a tremendous quality of bind. The machine offers great flexibility, and our staff tell me that it is a very user friendly machine: easy to learn and simple to operate.”

Passing comment on this latest machine order from the PUR range, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director at Morgana Systems, said: “We have been delighted over the last year with the reception of the DigiBook 200. The product offers the ideal solution for print businesses seeking quality PUR binding for short-run work.”

The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110 to 320mm and the maximum thickness is 50mm. Retractable spine milling means that the device can go from soft- to hard-cover binding at the flick of a switch. Side gluing for the cover hinge is adjustable depending upon the cover style required.

Demand for PUR binding from digital printers has been growing swiftly in recent years. The DigiBook range from Morgana Systems has proved extremely popular with print operations seeking a more effective and substantial bind than that offered by regular hot-melt devices.

PUR Range

The DigiBook range of machines are suited to both traditional and digital printers who require either short-run or production capacity PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The innovative DigiBook range of machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system, where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy.

DigiBook machines are innovative bookbinding products designed and built for the very latest market requirements. They are easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics, suitable for the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds. These include both start-up and shutdown and use a new, innovative system that is covered by a number of international patents.

The applicator is direct, and is hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, meaning that no extractor fan is required. This solution allows for the use of polyurethane glue in cartridges of up to 3kg, all adding up to simple and waste-free binding.

About Billingham Press

Billingham Press works to the most demanding of schedules and offer the most competitive of prices. Confidentiality of embargoed, sensitive or personal information is guaranteed at all times. Harrier Goes for PUR with Morgana DigiBook 300

In Finishing on September 18, 2014 at 7:49 am

Harrier LLC, the UK’s foremost digital printing photobook specialist, based in Newton Abbot, Devon, has announced the purchase and installation of a DigiBook 300 PUR perfect binding machine from Morgana Systems.

Harrier_JamesBelton

The company, well known for its significant installation of HP Indigo presses, houses a wide variety of finishing kit to produce photobooks and other digitally printed output for major high street and online brands. The company also prints for Truprint, itself a part of the Harrier LLC business.

The investment in the Morgana DigiBook 300 gives the company quality PUR binding for its larger product offerings, including XXL landscape books that can often extend to as much as 160 pages. “The Morgana product really hits the spot for our premium XXL landscape books. There really isn’t that much of a choice with regards to machines that can deliver a quality bind in that format,” said James Belton, Planning and Solutions Manager at Harrier LLC. “95% of our work is PUR bound – it provides the quality of bind that is essential for the digitally printed work that we produce.”

“Having reviewed the machines on the market, and had samples produced on the front-runners, Morgana’s DigiBook 300 came out way ahead of the rest. The quality of the milling station in particular put it out in front. With digital papers it is critical to significantly roughen the spine in order to produce the strength of bind that our customers expect, and that these high quality products deserve.

“The small footprint of the machine was an added bonus as well – it doesn’t take up that much floor space. We generally only assign one operator to the machine, though we can increase the output at particularly busy times by adding a second.

“Photobook products bound on the machine are typically runs of one, but can range in content from 20 pages up to 160 pages – that creates a sizeable publication. The side gluing capability of the DigiBook 300 is a big plus especially on larger page counts. It helps to provide that solidity of bind that we insist on and that delivers a product that is really going to last.”

Harrier LLC operates eight Indigo presses and a wide range of finishing solutions from its dual site production space in Devon, where the company employs a team of 150, swelling to over 300 at seasonally busy times.

“One of the reasons that we had the sample books produced is in order to put the finished products on our “page pull tester” to test the binding. We work to industry standard but the DigiBook 300 samples were so well bound that the test results far exceeded our standard expectations and in some cases actually went off the scale!”

Commenting on the installation at Harrier LLC on behalf of Morgana Systems, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director for the supplier, said: “It is a delight to see the DigiBook 300 positioned in such a demanding binding environment. The team at Harrier LLC were very thorough in their testing before selecting the right machine for the job, and that has to be to the credit of the DigiBook 300 – it is both rugged and hard working, making it very suitable to the demands of this extremely busy and quality conscious print business.”

About the DigiBook 300

The DigiBook 300 is suited to both traditional and digital printers who require short to medium runs of PUR perfect bound books to a truly professional standard. The DigiBook 300 is an innovative perfect binding machine designed and built for the very latest market requirements. There are a thousand alphanumeric memories available, which enable repeat jobs to be saved for later recall, thus providing totally automatic setup in a few seconds.
